The Ethnographic Park Pirámides de Güímar was founded in 1998 by the Norwegian researcher Thor Heyerdahl, who took care of safeguarding a complex of six mysterious pyramids located near the town of Güímar, in the south-eastern area of Tenerife, to ensure their study and conservation. We talked about the Pyramids in another article, and here we will delve into the splendid botanical garden that was created in this park.

At the Botanical Garden, visitors, can discover a wide range of plant collections in an area of over 20,000 square meters. These botanical exhibitions have been created under the banner of scientific conservation objectives and cultural and educational needs.

    • Conservation of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the environment
    • Environmental Education and Training for Sustainability
    • Botanical Research
    • Scientific promotion to the Society on Natural and Cultural Heritage

    Poisonous Garden

One of the specialized collections we can find at the Botanical Garden de Güímar is the Poisonous Garden, distinctive for hosting over 70 species of toxic and even lethal plants from all around the world. This peculiar space shows us several plants used over the centuries to create poisons and lethal potions. Few botanical gardens in the world can count on such a thorough collection of poisonous plants.

    Sustainable Garden

Another specialized collection is the Sustainable Garden, created in collaboration with the University of La Laguna. It recreates the flora and fauna of a typical Canarian canyon and represents a model of sustainability and conservation of the natural heritage.

We absolutely recommend that you dedicate a few hours to visit this fascinating park comprising the piramides and the botanical garden, and also an auditorium and a museum. The park is open every day from 10.00 to 18.00 and you can decide whether to buy the basic ticket for 12.50 euros or the premium ticket for 18 euros, which also includes the poisonous garden.

Tenerife have also another Botanical Garden in Puerto de La Cruz near La Orotava that is an attraction for who is in our Puerto Nest Hostel and for Guimar pyramids and botanical garden the closest hostels are our Aguere Nest and Medano Nest, also from Duque Nest you have the bus.

Created by Royal Order of Carlos III in 1788, La Orotava Acclimatisation Gardens are the oldest botanical garden in the Canary Islands. They are also known as Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden since years ago Puerto de la Cruz used to belong to the municipality of La Orotava and was known as Puerto de La Orotava.

This majestic garden is one of the best places in North Tenerife to have a walk in the nature because of its major collections of tropical and sub-tropical plants counting over 5000 different plants and 120 tree species.

Wandering among colorful flowers and ancient trees that seem to forge a fairytale setting, such as the imposing Ficus Macrophylla Columnaris, which is one of the main attractions of the park, visitors will marvel at the sight of the incredible variety of plants species, differing in age, size, rarity, and place of origin, that the garden offers.

The Botanical Garden covers about 20,000 square meters and fascinates the great diversity of species from all over the world. The climatic conditions of Tenerife have favored the coexistence of trees whose origins and environmental needs vary greatly. Alongside the indigenous plants, South American plants, Californian palms, bromeliads, succulents, and many other species thrive.

The project of this garden was born with the idea of bringing exotic plants from the New World, America, to the Iberian Peninsula. Tenerife served as an acclimatization center for these plants (that’s the reason of the official name) before being transferred to Spain.

The garden was enriched with biodiversity following four large botanical expeditions organized by Spain in the 18th century to the Philippines, Central America, Colombia and Peru.

La Orotava acclimatization garden can be visited all year round and is open every day from 9.00 to 18.00 (on Sundays it closes at 15.00). The entrance price is €3.00.

  • Playa de Las Americas Costa Adeje Tenerife, how is? What to do?

Playa de Las Americas Costa Adeje Tenerife, how is? What to do?

Playa de Las Americas is a splendid strip of golden sand bathed by crystal clear waters located in the south of Tenerife between the municipalities of Adeje and Arona, in the south of the island.

The area of Playa de Las Americas includes three other stunning beaches: Tierra Negra, El Bobo and Troya. Las Americas beach differs from the others for its bigger size: it is almost half a kilometer long and 60 meters wide. This artificial beach was created with golden sand that comes directly from the Sahara desert, and is one of the most important tourist destinations of the island.

    What to do?

In Playa de Las Americas, located near Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje near our Duque Nest Hostel, the weather is pleasant and sunny all year long, and it is considered a perfect tourist destination for families since it offers fun activities for all ages, such as water parks, water sports of various kinds, golf, and camel riding, but also a large selection of restaurants, bars and shops.

    What to do? Water activities

The water activities available include scuba diving, windsurfing, surf, kitesurfing, and jet-skiing, but also cruises with the possibility to spot whales and dolphins, entertaining rides in yellow submarines, and trips on pirate boats.

    What to do? Nightlife

Playa de Las Americas is also a great choice for young people looking for a vibrant nightlife: in fact, it is considered the ‘’party capital’’ of Tenerife. In particular, in the area known as ‘Las Veronica’s Strip’ you will find a plethora of nightclubs and bars, most of which are open all night long.

    What to do? Siam Park

To spend a day full of fun, you absolutely must plan a visit the Siam Park, the largest water park in Europe. The main theme of the park is the ancient Kingdom of Siam, the current Thailand. For this reason, inside the park it is possible to find white sandy beaches, tropical nature and a particular floating market reminiscent of the Bangkok one. Inside the park you can go down steep slides or surf on giant waves, but also relax and enjoy the sun or a nice Thai massage.

This unique experience allows visitors to discover the coastline from Costa Adeje to Los Gigantes and watch dolphins and pilot whales, a resident species of cetaceans who can be seen all year round in the marine area between Tenerife and the island of La Gomera.

The activity begins and ends in Puerto Colón (very close to Duque Nest Hostel), and not only does it include food and drinks, but it also provides a free pick-up service from different locations both in the North and in the South. Depending on how much time you wish to spend at sea, you can choose between the 3 hour and the 5 hour excursion.

A highlight of this tour is the snorkeling stop near the beach of Masca, among the famous “Acantilados de Los Gigantes”, the jaw-dropping vertical cliffs of volcanic origins, reaching a height of 600 meters and considered some of the tallest in the world.

On the way back, the ecological catamaran cruises along the beaches of La Caleta, Playa de la Enramada, Playa del Veril, Playa del Duque, Playa Fañabé, Playa Torviscas and Playa la Pinta, giving the chance to take amazing pictures of the diverse landscape.

  • Tenerife Forestal Park – Teide National Park

Tenerife Forestal Park – Teide National Park

ENJOY ADRENALINE AND NATURE AT TENERIFE FORESTAL PARK

Imagine spending a day among ziplines, high ropes and Tarzan swings in the treetops, at 1400 mt above sea level and in the heart of a protected area of National Park of Teide. No matter if you are experienced with adventure parks or if you never tried before: action and fun are guaranteed.

In the pine tree forest of Las Lagunetas, at the edge of the Teide National Park and only 16 km from the town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife Forestal Park is a one of a kind spot on the island. It features 11 ziplines, including the longest one in the Canaries (230 meters), dozens of suspended bridges among the trees, and even giant rope “spider webs” and ladders that allow you to climb up and enjoy the view, as well as the fresh pine scent and peacefulness of the forest.

Giant rope “spider webs” Forestal Park
Giant rope “spider webs” Forestal Park

What characterizes this adventure park is the extreme safety and its organization, so that visitors can enjoy their time and the activities without any worry. Reservation is mandatory and before arrival (here the official page for reservation, here the price list) you will receive all necessary information on how to prepare and what to bring. At the entrance, the staff will equip you with helmet, harness and carabiners, and then clearly explain (in English or Spanish) how to properly use the gear and stay connected at all times to the safety system.

After the briefing, you will start with an initiation circuit, which is meant to let you practice what you just learned about climbing, crossing obstacles and ziplining, until you feel comfortable and confident using the equipment. At that point, you are free to move around the park for the rest of the 3 hours and engage in the activities you prefer.

You can choose among various circuits with different level of complexity and altitude, and each of them has the name of a different Canary Island. These attractions are divided in two groups: the family circuit and the sport circuit. The first one is designed for kids and this is why the park is so popular among local families and schools. The second group is for teens and adults who seek more adrenaline, with crossings reaching a height of 30 meters. If you like the altitude, it’s definitely the place for you…and if you’re afraid of heights it can be the right occasion to address your fear, as the first circuits start very low and you feel safe and supported the entire time. Try it to believe it!

Groups of min. 10 people have the option to choose any date even outside the official opening days (Fri-Sat-Sun), for a more private experience or to celebrate an event.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not only the most important and renowned in all of Europe, but by size also the largest worldwide, only second to Rio de Janeiro. Already in 1980 it was declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest, and in 2019 it counted almost 400,000 people. What makes it special, and why is it so beloved both by locals and visitors?

    Carnival Tenerife 2023

Every year, the capital of Tenerife (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) turns into a huge, vibrant, two-week long party featuring costume parades, shows, contests, concerts, colors and contagious energy, all this for the «Tenerife Carnaval». The opening of this feast is the spectacular Gala for the crowning of the three Carnival Queens (child, adult, senior) 15 Febrary at 21:30 at Centro Internacional de Ferias y Congresos, in which candidates wear shiny handmade masterpieces that can measure up to three meters in height and weigh hundreds of kilos. This event is broadcast live not just across the Canaries and the rest of Spain, but even in other countries.

After the election of the Queens, celebrations begin and the parade of over 100 different Carnival-groups (divided into murgas, comparsas and rondallas), with an average of 50 members each, floods the streets with their music, costumes, dances and performances.

This is when thousands of citizens get involved and creative, and participate with their own costumes and joyfulness, dancing day and night in their dresses and wigs, never taking themselves too seriously and fully embracing the spirit of this traditional and beloved festival until the very end, which is the fireworks show on the Sunday evening of the so-called Piñata-weekend. This event is not to miss in the Santa Cruz Carnival!

  • Acantilados de Los Gigantes Tenerife South

Acantilados de Los Gigantes Tenerife South

The cliffs of Los Gigantes, on the south west coast of Tenerife, represent one of the most spectacular and visited areas of the island, as well as one of the warmest.

These are impressive basaltic walls of volcanic origin overhanging the Atlantic Ocean, which vary in height from 300 to 600 meters and extend for 10 kilometres. The seabed at the foot of these cliffs reaches depths of 30-40 meters, allowing various endangered marine species such as fish eagles and large sea turtles to develop without risk.

The small town Puerto de Santiago with our Arena Nest Hostel, once a fishing village, has a small marvellous touristic harbour where many boat excursions depart every day to allow tourists to spot dolphins and cetaceans.

In the village you will find many small shops, cafes and restaurants, and a small splendid black sand beach, Playa Los Guios, where it is possible to rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards or simply swimming and snorkelling in the crystal clear water surrounded by the astonishing cliffs of Los Gigantes.

We recommend you not to miss the sunset in Los Gigantes. Depending on the time of year you see it, you can watch the sun set in the sea or on the neighbouring island of La Gomera, or even at certain times of the year a very particular phenomenon happens: the sun seems to set well above of the horizon. This is because through the refraction of light we can see the sun setting behind the mountains of the island of La Palma, but not the island itself due to the high distance.

To top it all off, in the village of Puerto de Santiago/Los Gigantes every year is celebrated the oldest and most celebrated carnival in South Tenerife. It takes place in February one week after the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival with celebrations and parades through the village that re-evoke historical costumes and traditions of the island.

You can get to Los Gigantes by public transport, and if you have a rental car, you can also reach the cliffs of Los Gigantes on your own by taking the TF-1 highway from the south.
